EAN-13 or Code 39?
EAN-13 is the international standard used on products on store shelves. If you will supply your own product to retailers and the barcode must be unique worldwide, you need to get your own company prefix from GS1 (in Turkey, GS1 Turkey) — a randomly generated number could collide with another product.
Code 39 is ideal for internal codes you use in your own shop: shelf numbers, fixed-asset tags, unpackaged items. It accepts letters, needs no check digit, and every scanner can read it.
What to watch out for when printing labels
For a barcode to scan, its width must not be distorted. In the print dialog, leave the scale at 100% and turn off “fit to page”.
If you have a thermal label printer (58/80 mm), you can download a single label as SVG and import it into your printer software. If you will print on A4, this tool generates a ready-made 3-column label sheet.
Leave at least 3 mm of blank space (quiet zone) on both sides of the barcode; scanners use this space to find where the barcode starts.
Linking the barcode to your inventory tracking
Enter the code you generated in the “Barcode” column of the product price list template. Because barcode scanners behave like a keyboard, if you place the cursor in the cell and scan, the code is typed in directly — so your Excel list and the label on the shelf share the same code.
Frequently asked questions
Is the barcode I generate valid everywhere?
In your own shop, yes. If you will supply your product to supermarket chains or marketplaces, the barcode must be globally unique; for that you obtain a company prefix from GS1.
Do I need to calculate the check digit myself?
No. If you enter 12 digits, the tool calculates the 13th automatically. If you enter 13 digits, it checks that it is correct and tells you the right one if it isn’t.
Where can I save the barcode image?
You can download it as SVG. Because SVG is vector-based, it doesn’t lose quality when enlarged; Word, Excel and label-printing programs support it.
Can I use Turkish characters?
Code 39 supports only digits, A–Z and a few symbols. The product name may contain Turkish characters (that is only the label text), but the code itself cannot.
How many labels can I print?
Up to 200 at a time. The sheet is laid out on A4 in 3 columns, and cutting lines are printed as dashed lines.
